Dinoyo has emerged as a hub for ceramic artisans in the city of Malang, Indonesia, and its ceramic products have now made their mark in the export market. The Chairman of the Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) for Dinoyo Ceramics, explains that the production of ceramics in Dinoyo has evolved from traditional to modern methods. Previously, the pottery was fired using wood branches and straw as fuel, with kilns fueled by kerosene and diesel oil. However, today, all of this has shifted towards machine kilns powered by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). While the production processes remain somewhat traditional or decorative and are performed manually, there has been a transition to modernity primarily in terms of the firing process. In today's era, with limited availability and high costs of kerosene, they have resorted to iron kilns fueled by LPG since LPG fuel is quite effective now, readily available, pollution-free, and yields satisfactory results. In terms of production, there is no difference in the quality of ceramic products made or fired using traditional or modern methods. This is because the composition and firing temperature remain the same, with no discernible differences.
Regarding the market, Dinoyo ceramic products continue to attract interest. There are three main groups of ceramic consumers: those who place orders, retailers or merchants who buy in bulk to resell in various regions, and tourists who purchase directly when visiting Dinoyo Ceramic Village. Due to the influx of tourists visiting Dinoyo Ceramic Village and their fascination with the manual ceramic-making process, artisans have decided to transform Dinoyo into an educational tourism destination focused on ceramics. Meanwhile, one of the ceramic vendors states that there are no hindrances to ceramic sales at present. Moreover, there are still many tourists visiting the Dinoyo Ceramic Village. In fact, she reports daily sales ranging from IDR 1 million to IDR 2 million. During holidays, her earnings can soar to IDR 10 million to IDR 15 million per day.
