Italy Poised to Rank as the Third Largest Global Market in Offshore Wind Energy

Italy is currently underutilizing its vast offshore wind energy potential despite having 8,300 kilometers of coastline. Only 10 offshore wind turbines are operational, with a capacity of 30 MW, a mere fraction of what is possible. To address this, a project called the "Floating offshore wind community" aims to promote floating offshore wind installations as an environmentally friendly solution. This initiative, created by The European House – Ambrosetti in collaboration with various partners, seeks to accelerate Italy's green transition by leveraging the energy potential of floating offshore wind while minimizing environmental and social impacts. Italy's current position in the global offshore wind sector falls behind, with ambitious targets to reach by 2030, including both fixed-bottom and floating installations.

Despite these challenges, Italy stands as a promising market for floating offshore wind due to its morphology and seafloor characteristics, particularly in regions like Sardinia, Sicily, and Apulia. These areas offer significant growth opportunities, with the potential to generate substantial economic value and create millions of jobs. However, Italy faces various hurdles, including the need for ambitious targets, strategic planning, streamlined authorization procedures, incentivizing systems, and network capacity expansion. Overcoming these challenges will be essential for Italy to harness the potential of floating offshore wind and achieve its decarbonization and energy transition goals.
