In recent years, Indonesia's investment in the electric vehicle (EV) battery sector has gained global attention, positioning the country as a key player in EV battery production. Bahlil Lahadalia, the Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), disclosed that from 2020 to 2023, Indonesia has attracted a substantial investment of USD 42 billion, equivalent to IDR 630 trillion, in the electric vehicle battery industry. This impressive influx of foreign direct investment (FDI) has been commended by members of the Indonesian Parliament, including Mukhtarudin from the Golkar Party.
Mukhtarudin expressed his appreciation for Minister Bahlil's efforts in boosting investment in the EV ecosystem, emphasizing its positive impact on the country. He highlighted the importance of safeguarding these substantial FDI commitments to ensure their realization. Indonesia's abundant nickel reserves and its growing reputation in the global market have contributed to the trust and interest of foreign investors. Furthermore, the conducive investment climate and increased tax revenue, particularly from the downstream sector, have illustrated the benefits of these investments for Indonesia.
Mukhtarudin also stressed the need for these investments to translate into job opportunities for the local population, particularly those residing near industrial areas. He urged the government to establish labor regulations prioritizing employment opportunities in the EV battery sector for Indonesian citizens while also focusing on enhancing the quality of the workforce and technology transfer. These efforts aim to position Indonesia as a formidable competitor on the global stage in the production of electric vehicle batteries, attracting established manufacturers from Europe and the United States to set up production facilities within the country, thus capitalizing on Indonesia's ample raw materials. Overall, these developments are expected to propel Indonesia into a prominent role in the global EV battery market.
