Kualanamu Customs, in collaboration with the Medan Class II Agricultural Quarantine Office, conducted surveillance on the inaugural export of 300 live chrysalises destined for Denver, United States through the cargo terminal of Kualanamu International Airport on Sunday, August 20, 2023. This export activity was carried out by PT Saman Seudati Lestari, one of the micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) players under the guidance of Kualanamu Customs and Medan Class II Quarantine Office. According to the Head of Kualanamu Customs, this export marks a tangible manifestation of the core duties and functions of Customs as a trade facilitator and industrial assistant, aimed at supporting the enhancement of the national economy through regional exports and empowering export-oriented MSMEs. This inaugural export of live chrysalises demonstrates that MSMEs are capable of accessing the international market and contributing significantly to the national economy.
These live chrysalises are the progenitors of Graphium Agamemmon butterfly species, belonging to the Lepidoptera order and Papilionidae family. The chrysalises exported to the United States are the results of captive breeding of endemic Sumatran butterflies, which will be bred in the Denver Zoo, United States. On the other hand, a representative from PT Saman Seudati Lestari, affirmed that this inaugural export was made possible through the pivotal roles of Kualanamu Customs and Medan Class II Quarantine Office. Once the licensing process was completed and lawful, the export could materialize. Kualanamu Customs is committed to regional economic growth through the nurturing and assistance of export-oriented MSMEs. They are establishing a technical export guidance team to mentor potential exporters from business development to achieving export capability. The hope is that this inaugural export showcases the ease of exporting and motivates and propels other MSMEs to embark on export ventures.
