Rapid Growth of Indonesia's Digital Economy In Less Than 10 Years

The Ministry of Finance (MoF) highlights the rapid growth of Indonesia's digital economy in less than a decade. The Director General of Fiscal Balance at MoF cited data from the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (Eria) indicating that Indonesia's digital economy grew by 414% from 2017 to 2021. Furthermore, growth from 2021 to 2025 is projected to reach 62%. In less than 10 years, Indonesia's digital economy has grown significantly. This demonstrates that the digital economy has played a vital role in supporting Indonesia's economic growth and will continue to do so in the future. The benefits of Indonesia's digital economy are felt across various sectors, including the Ministry of Finance. Digital transformation within the landscape of the ministry has contributed to a more equitable enhancement of business processes and organisational structures.

Furthermore, digital transformation has facilitated the implementation of fiscal policies to bolster robust economic development. The projected value of Indonesia's digital economy is set to reach 360 billion US dollars by 2030. This projection is based on the performance in 2022, which recorded Indonesia's digital economy at USD 77 billion, representing a growth of 22% compared to the previous year. With this value, Indonesia emerges as a key player in the regional digital economy, commanding over 40% of the ASEAN market share. Recognizing the potential of the digital economy within the country, the government has undertaken various efforts to cultivate this ecosystem. For instance, through the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo), the government has initiated several programs including Digital Literacy Indonesia, Enhanced Digital Capability, Cyber Creation Program, Digital Talent Scholarship, and Digital Leadership Academy. Recently, Minister of Communication and Information conveyed during the Digital Economy Minister Meeting (DEMM) of the G20 India, that Indonesia invites fellow G20 member states to continue collaborating in achieving global digital transformation.
