Indonesia and Mexico Expand Economic Cooperation at the 8th Bilateral Consultation Forum

Indonesia and Mexico have agreed to enhance closer cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, and people-to-people contacts, including education, tourism, and exchange of educators and students. This consensus was reached during the 8th Bilateral Consultation Forum between Indonesia and Mexico held in Jakarta on August 29. During this meeting, the Indonesian delegation was led by Ambassador Umar Hadi, Director-General for Americas and Europe of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Meanwhile, the Mexican delegation was headed by Fernando Gonzalez Saiffe, Director-General for Asia Pacific of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Both delegations exchanged views on issues of mutual concern within the bilateral and global contexts. In the bilateral sphere, Director-General Umar Hadi emphasised that Mexico is a strategic partner of Indonesia in the Americas region. This is evidenced by the doubling of trade value over the past five years, exceeding USD 2 billion, making Mexico the second-largest export destination for Indonesia in the Americas.

To further intensify economic cooperation, both delegations welcomed the conclusion of three collaborations such as, cooperation on halal product assurance between the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Indonesia and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Mexico, collaboration between the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) and the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade (COMCE), and partnership between the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) and the United States-Mexico Chamber of Commerce (USMCOC). In the global context, both delegations discussed cooperation in international forums, including the United Nations, G20, MIKTA, and ASEAN. Mexico specifically expressed support for Indonesia's chairmanship of ASEAN and MIKTA in 2023, building on Indonesia's successful G20 presidency in the previous year. Mexico is a strategic partner for Indonesia in the Americas region. Mexico ranks as the 5th largest trading partner, the 2nd largest export destination, and the 2nd largest contributor to trade surplus in the entire Americas region.
