Ensuring Stable Power Supply, PLN Backs Downstreaming Efforts to Establish a Domestic Electric Vehicle Industry Ecosystem

Indonesia's state-owned electricity company, PT PLN (Persero), is fully backing efforts to accelerate the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in alignment with Indonesia's vision for 2045. PT PLN is actively preparing for the electric vehicle transition by ensuring electric supply and developing supportive infrastructure, including Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) and Public Electric Vehicle Battery Exchange Stations (SPBKLU). The government, led by President Joko Widodo, aims to leverage Indonesia's significant nickel resources, constituting a quarter of global reserves, to become a major player in the electric vehicle industry. The process involves converting nickel resources into export-ready batteries.

Government officials, including Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia and Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Susiwijono Moegiarso, emphasise President Widodo's vision to establish Indonesia as a prominent electric vehicle producer by 2027. The strategy encompasses three stages of localization: refining nickel for battery production, boosting manufacturing industries, and building a comprehensive electric vehicle ecosystem. PLN, headed by CEO Darmawan Prasodjo, is aligned with President Widodo's directive to accelerate the growth of the electric vehicle ecosystem by transforming energy sourcing from imports to domestic, reducing costs, and lowering carbon emissions. PLN pledges its support through ensuring reliable power supply, facilitating infrastructure for electric vehicles, and collaborating with two-wheel electric vehicle OEMs to establish a robust battery ecosystem. In addition to expanding Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations, PLN offers home charging services, discounted rates for overnight charging, and integrated digital services through the Electric Vehicle Digital Services platform (EVDS) within the PLN Mobile application. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance the convenience and accessibility of electric vehicle usage in Indonesia's drive towards becoming a leading player in the electric vehicle industry.
