Business Opportunities In The Energy Sector In Southeast Asia Unveiled

The hosting of The 41st ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meetings (AMEM-41) 2023 in Bali has resulted in a Joint Ministerial Statement (JMS) regarding the sustainability of the implementation of the ASEAN Plan for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Phase II: 2021-2025. This plan encompasses the interconnectivity of ASEAN countries through the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline (TAGP); Coal and Clean Coal Technology (CCT); Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EE&C); Renewable Energy (RE); Regional Energy Policy and Planning (REPP); and Civilian Nuclear Energy. With numerous forms of collaboration anticipated between ASEAN nations based on this joint statement, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources has highlighted that significant opportunities will emerge for energy sector players to participate in ASEAN energy projects.

Knowledge and technology transfer are necessary to achieve APAEC goals. This includes technology and research on new renewable energy (EBT) and low-carbon technologies, reinforcing facilities and involvement in CCT and CCUS, as well as enhancing capacity in energy safety management and nuclear technology. According to him, the opening of these opportunities will trigger a domino effect, particularly in generating green employment opportunities. ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Vietnam, possess significant mineral resources such as nickel, tin, bauxite, and rare earth elements. These resources can be utilised to support energy transitions. Thus, mineral processing, refining units, and manufacturing for mineral-based industries are necessary, particularly for clean energy technology components like solar PV, battery industries, and electric vehicles. Despite fossil fuels remaining the majority of global primary energy consumption in 2022, many countries are moving towards green energy and decarbonization. Indonesia, with its vast territory, strategic location, and abundant natural resources, will have a key role to play. Indonesia holds significant potential for the future. One of these potentials lies in new and renewable energy (EBT), which presents an opportunity to establish businesses for future energy transition. Indonesia possesses a potential of 400 Giga Tons for potential CCUS clusters.
