Chips from Batu City Become Export Commodities, Valued IDR 17.5 Billion

A range of products from Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) in Batu City have now penetrated the export market. These products include carrot and potato chips, tempeh chips, and fruit chips. Moreover, their quantity continues to rise. According to data from the Department of Cooperatives, Micro and Small Enterprises, and Trade (Diskumdag) of Batu City, the export value in 2021 reached IDR 6 billion. Subsequently, in 2022, this value more than doubled, reaching IDR 17.5 billion. This export value has led to a shift in the highest contributing export commodities as it was previously dominated by ornamental plants, the dominance now lies with UMKM. In general, the export figures for all commodities experienced growth in 2022. However, processed chips saw a particularly drastic increase. From fruit chips to tempeh chips, they have tantalised the taste buds of people abroad.

The exported tempeh chips amount to 20,000 packages. If the weight of the products is considered, these packages collectively weigh more than 1 ton. The export destinations for these tempeh chips include Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Brunei Darussalam. This increase is attributed to the relaxation of export restrictions. In 2021, there were many restrictions that caused a decrease in exports. In 2023, the Batu City Government aims to further increase the export value in the city to IDR  20 billion. Currently, Batu City is home to 2,897 MSMEs units. Out of this number, 331 MSMEs have received an upgrade in classification due to collaboration with companies in Indonesia for export activities. These 331 MSMEs have engaged in exports, sending carrot and potato chips, tempeh chips, and fruit chips. Hence, this serves as motivation for other UMKM players to continuously improve the quality of their products. Moreover, MSMEs have contributed 86.7% to the Gross Regional Domestic Product (PDRB) of Batu City, totaling IDR  18.5 trillion. MSMEs in Batu City also accounted for 18.6% of the total UMKM growth in East Java in 2023.
