Expansion of Mud Crab Export From Maluku To ASEAN Market

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has initiated the export of 1.7 tons of mud crab from Maluku to the ASEAN market as part of efforts to broaden the export market for mud crab commodities. The exported commodities had undergone a quality assurance process conducted by the Ambon Fish Quarantine, Quality Control, and Safety of Fishery Products (BKIPM). This process included size inspections in compliance with the permissible standards. The focus was not solely on economic growth, but also on the sustainability of mud crab resources in line with Article 8, paragraph (1) of the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Regulation No. 16 of 2022. The regulation pertains to the capture, transport, and/or release of mud crab.

The alignment of economic and ecological concerns within BKIPM Ambon stems from Maluku's projection as the National Fishery Reserve. According to data from BKIPM Ambon, the export value of Maluku's fishery commodities in the first semester of 2023 reached USD 34.5 million, marking a 79.56% increase from 2022. From an export volume perspective, live fishery commodities in the January-June 2023 period reached 177,362 units, demonstrating a 75.69% increase compared to the same period in 2022, which saw 100,951 units. Meanwhile, KKP has successfully facilitated the export of Indonesian fishery products to 172 countries by ensuring quality and safety through traceability certification and critical control point (HACCP) certification. The traceability certification of marine and fishery product quality had encompassed 230 fish processing units (UPI) and critical control point (HACCP) certification as of November 2022. The increased certification has bolstered the acceptance of Indonesian fishery products by 172 countries in 2022. Additionally, KKP, through BKIPM, has established Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRA) or agreements with competent authorities in several countries, including the European Union, South Korea, China, Russia, Canada, Vietnam, Norway, and Saudi Arabia. BKIPM's contributions are further recognized following the Regulatory Partnership Agreement (RPA) with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to secure and expand shrimp exports to the United States (US).
