Indonesian Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan said the renewal of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) would provide greater access for Indonesian goods and services to the markets of ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand. Through a modernization model of trade practices, providing opportunities for Indonesian businesses and investors by increasing market access in the services and investment trade sector. According to Zulhas, the renewal of AANZFTA can also provide facilities and business climate for consumer protection. The new AANZFTA provisions also provide a corridor for the adoption of digital technology in electronic payment systems and telecommunications access. All changes in AANZFTA are to make the tripartite free trade pact more responsive to future challenges and crises through facilitative provisions.
Ease of facilitation of trade in essential goods, opening areas of cooperation, information exchange and capacity building for MSMEs, procurement of government goods/services as well as sustainable trade and development. The second protocol amending the AANZFTA has been signed by Indonesia, Brunei Darusalam, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. Economic ministers from other ASEAN countries will sign the AANZFTA changes in turn or ad referendum. The second protocol of the AANZFTA amendment is targeted to be implemented in 2024 or 60 days after Australia, New Zealand and at least four ASEAN member states submit instruments of ratification.
