Promising Prospects for Local Game Export to Global Market, States Vice Minister of Trade

Vice Minister of Trade has affirmed that the Ministry of Trade (MoT) is supporting the development of Indonesia’s gaming industry for exports to the global market. So far, the potential for this development is considered promising. As a regulator, the Ministry of Trade can aid in providing market access facilitation for business players, both in goods and services, including games. A total of 45 trade representatives were present, consisting of Ambassadors of the World Trade Organization, Indonesian Trade and Economic Offices, Trade Consuls, 23 Trade Attachés, and 19 Indonesian Trade Promotion Centers. The growth potential of gaming remains extraordinary due to factors such as gamers’ ability to choose cross-platform play, engagement in e-sports or live streaming, and options to play games at full price, for free (free-to-play), or through subscription.

Additionally, the presence of mobile technology and new networks is expanding the gaming market in developing countries. The emergence of the younger generation is also expected to shape global consumption patterns further and lead to the emergence of new players, including the older generation and female groups. Exporting games is easier compared to physical goods since games do not require storage warehouses, multi-layer inspections, and they do not depreciate during transportation. Based on MoT's data, Indonesia's economy grew by 5.31% throughout 2022, higher than the 3.7% growth achieved in 2021. The trade balance surplus in 2022 reached USD 54.46 billion, equivalent to around IDR 835.72 trillion. This was supported by Indonesia's exports in 2022, amounting to USD 291.98 billion or approximately IDR 4,480 trillion. Sustainable gaming ecosystem needs to be developed.
