Indonesia Sets a 2023 Export Goal of IDR 1.5 Trillion for Batik

The Indonesian government has set an ambitious target for the export of one of its popular creative industry products, batik. The goal for Indonesian batik exports in 2023 is set at USD 100 million or around IDR 1.5 trillion, representing a 35.44% increase from the previous year's export value of USD 64.56 million. Despite the steep export target, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita considers it realistic, given the positive performance of Indonesia's batik industry last year, which recorded a 30.1% year-on-year increase in exports. Minister Agus emphasized the favorable economic climate amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, with the Indonesian economy showing signs of growth. He pointed out that this presents a significant opportunity for the batik industry to thrive again, in line with President Joko Widodo's assertion. The Ministry of Industry is actively collaborating with various stakeholders, including associations, businesses, designers, academics, e-commerce platforms, and influencers, to boost domestic batik exports. This collaborative effort aims to introduce and promote the rich potential of domestic batik heritage.

Minister Agus highlighted the competitiveness of Indonesia's unique batik due to its innovative motifs, designs, and patterns rooted in local wisdom. Four Geographical Indication (GI) batik motifs that represent distinct regions include Batik Tulis Nitik Yogyakarta, Batik Besurek Bengkulu, Sarung Batik Pekalongan, and Batik Tulis Complongan Indramayu. These batik styles are protected intellectual properties. The Ministry of Industry encourages batik communities to register their products with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, advocate for the use of batik as a mark of honor for local wisdom, and transition toward environmentally friendly practices. The Ministry encourages the reuse, recycle, and recovery (3R) concept within the batik industry, such as recycling used wax for efficiency and reusing color dyes through Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs). Minister Agus highlighted that the batik industry is a labor-intensive sector, providing income and livelihoods to millions of Indonesians.
