The Provincial Government of Papua, through the Department of Trade, Industry, Cooperatives, and SMEs, has highlighted that following the establishment of new autonomous regions, 9 districts and cities possess opportunities to export fishery products, thereby potentially becoming a new source of economic growth in the Land of Papua. The Head of Department of Trade, Industry, Cooperatives, and SMEs of Papua Province, stated in Jayapura on Monday that the districts with export potential include Sarmi, Jayapura, Kota Jayapura, Biak, Yapen, Serui, and Waropen. Therefore, the Department are currently focusing on the fisheries sector as well as the development of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
Sarmi has potential in mackerel, while Biak is known for tuna, skipjack, and bonito. Moreover, Serui and Yapen exhibit considerable potential in seaweed production, and Waropen has crab farming potential. These areas have fish of commendable quality, which is competitive on par with other regions. Consequently, the Department urges all local governments in districts and cities to unveil the potential within the fisheries sector by enhancing both quality and quantity. Post the establishment of new autonomous regions, Papua has a more expansive fisheries sector and a robust MSME presence. The Department aims to promote this growth for a better impact on society. Besides the fisheries sector and MSMEs, there is also room for the development of the creative economy. Hence, this will be the focal point for the Department of Trade, Industry, Cooperatives, and SMEs in augmenting local revenue (PAD) and community economy.
