Conducting Indonesia Food Innovation Event, Ministry of Industry Shapes Innovative Modern Food MSMEs

Amid the global economic pressures of 2023, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the food and beverage sector in Indonesia are facing various business challenges. Despite these obstacles, the SMEs in the food and beverage sector continue to play a significant role in the nation's economic growth and community empowerment. Reni Yanita, the Director-General of Small, Medium, and Various Industries at the Ministry of Industry, emphasizes that in the era of globalization, Indonesian food and beverage SMEs have an opportunity to market their products internationally. To achieve this, these SMEs need to adapt, innovate, and align with market trends and demands.

These SMEs often struggle to elevate their status due to limitations in capital, unprofessional management practices, failure to meet standards and legal requirements, and limited innovation. Additionally, external challenges such as uncertain raw material supply, new competitors and products, and highly fluctuating market demands pose further difficulties. Reni suggests that Indonesia's membership in The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) presents a significant chance for local food and beverage SMEs to tap into global markets and collaborate with advanced nations. As developed countries shift towards green industries and sustainable resource management through digitalization, the Ministry of Industry aims to assist green and circular economy-oriented SMEs with innovative product creation, enabling them to navigate new circumstances effectively.

To address both challenges and opportunities in the sustainable business-focused market, the Directorate General of Small, Medium, and Various Industries (IKMA) has launched the fourth edition of the Indonesia Food Innovation (IFI) program. This initiative seeks to provide proper guidance and support to food and beverage SMEs from business and technical experts, enabling them to accelerate their businesses towards being modern, marketable, profitable, and sustainable. By focusing on sustainable supply chains, added value, and dynamic market solutions, the program aims to enhance the capacity and innovation of Indonesian food industry participants.
