Italy's Gaming Industry Expanded by 50% During 2022

In 2022, Italy's games industry employed over 2,400 professionals, marking a significant 50% increase from the previous year, highlighting the sector's expansion. The data emerges from a report by the Italian Interactive Digital Entertainment Association (IIDEA), presented during its First Playable event in Florence last month. Italy's games market has been gaining momentum following the implementation of tax incentives for game development in May 2021.

The report indicates that 20% of companies now have workforces ranging from 11 to 20 employees, a 5% rise compared to 2021. Moreover, 69% of surveyed companies expressed intentions to hire additional staff or collaborate with new partners over the next two years, reflecting a 10% increase from the preceding year. Half of the employees fall within the 30-35 age group, while 32% are aged between 25 and 29, with only 7% exceeding 40 years of age. The female workforce in the industry increased by 1% to 24%.

The industry, primarily funded through self-financing (86%), is gradually diversifying its funding sources. Publisher support stands at 30%, public funding increased to 29% from 24%, private equity backs 19%, fundraising accounts for 13%, banking assistance is at 10%, future venture capital is financed by 7%, and platform holders provide financial aid for 5%. In terms of platforms, most companies are involved in PC game development (84%), followed by mobile (54%) and console (38%). The industry remains relatively small, with 22% of companies reporting a turnover exceeding EUR 500,000, 26% achieving between EUR 100,000 and EUR 500,000, and 52% generating less than EUR 100,000 in turnover.
