Sabang, Aceh Achieves a Capture Fisheries Production of 4,433 Tons

The Department of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (DKP) in Sabang, Aceh, has reported that the catch fishery production in the westernmost region of Indonesia reached 4,433 tons in the first half of 2023, which is short of the targeted 9,067 tons for the year. "Considering the production achievement in the first semester, God willing, we can achieve the target by the end of the year," said Lifriza, the Head of the Fisheries Department at DKP Sabang, when contacted from Banda Aceh on Monday. He explained that the primary source of income for the Pulau Weh area's residents comes from the marine sector. Therefore, the government's programs tend to remain similar each year in the effort to improve the livelihoods of fishermen. To reach the fish catch target, the Sabang City Government plans to enhance fishing facilities and infrastructure for fishermen while also improving human resources through the development of fishermen groups.

Lifriza stated that this year's DKP program, similar to previous years, focuses on improving catch production by providing fishing facilities and infrastructure. Additionally, they offer facilities such as fish storage tanks to maintain the quality of the caught fish. Up until 2022, Lifriza mentioned that there were 1,295 fishermen in Sabang, along with 14 joint business groups and 13 fishermen's cooperatives, 9 cultivation groups, 14 processing and marketing groups for fishery products, and 12 groups for marine and fisheries resource supervision. In the previous year, fishermen achieved a catch production of 8,634 tons, 10.4 tons of cultivated fish, and 34 tons of processed fishery products.
