Batik Exports Surge by 30.1% in 2022, Ministry of Industry's Initiatives Revealed

The Indonesian Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin), particularly the Directorate General of Small, Medium, and Diverse Industries (IKMA), is dedicated to advancing and sustaining the nation's batik industry. As a cultural heritage with immense potential, the batik industry faces challenges in competing with both local and global fashion products. To enhance the potential and prospects of Indonesian batik, the Indonesian Batik Foundation (YBI) and Kemenperin have organized the Batik Nusantara Exhibition (GBN) 2023 with the theme "Batik, Rise Up!". Taking place from August 2 to 6, 2023, in Jakarta, the GBN 2023 event was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo alongside the First Lady, Iriana Joko Widodo. During the inauguration, the President and First Lady participated in the creation of Batik Complongan Indramayu, one of the batik designs that received a geographical indication (GI) certificate from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in 2022. IKMA, in collaboration with YBI, the Directorate General of Intellectual Property, and Regional Industrial Offices, strives to help MSMEs gain geographical indication protection for their products.

Director General of IKMA at Kemenperin, Reni Yanita, explained that obtaining GI certification for SME products offers various benefits, including protecting producers and consumers from counterfeiting, enhancing the market position of products in new markets, increasing the value of products from a specific region, and providing clear information to consumers about the quality and origin of their purchases. To apply for GI certification, essential aspects include having unique characteristics or features that give reputation, quality, and specific attributes to the product in question. Reni emphasized that the government is focused on revitalizing the batik industry after the Covid-19 pandemic's three-year impact. Batik plays a crucial role in the national economy. In 2022, batik and batik product exports reached USD 64.56 million, a 30.1% increase compared to 2021. From January to April 2023, the exports amounted to USD 26.7 million. Reni concluded by stating that the government aims to collaborate with all stakeholders to boost the batik industry to achieve the USD 100 million export target for batik and batik products in 2023.
