Liquid Palm Sugar from North Sumatra Achieves an Annual Turnover of IDR 800 Million and Successfully Penetrates the Global Export Market

Liquid palm sugar from North Sumatra has successfully penetrated the export markets of Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, the Netherlands, and Japan, and has participated in exhibitions in Saudi Arabia. This liquid palm sugar has shown great potential, as evident from Puri Food & Healthy's annual revenue of IDR 800 million. Minister of Agriculture continues to encourage and push plantation entrepreneurs to make breakthroughs and innovate by creating diverse derivative products, developing value-added and competitive derivative products, thereby enhancing the welfare of farmers and advancing a modern, independent, and progressive agriculture sector, including plantations. Cooperation between farmers and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) players is essential to accelerate the downstreaming of plantation products. The Ministry of Agriculture supports this initiative, mobilizing its units, particularly the Directorate General of Plantations, to enhance the potential products that need to be developed and assist UMKMs in need of raw materials or expansion.

The production can reach approximately 1,500 to 2,000 bottles of liquid palm sugar (500 ml). The product supplies the needs of around 50 supermarkets in the North Sumatra region, and there are plans to enter the hospitality industry. The company collaborates with palm sugar farmers to obtain the raw materials. The liquid palm sugar has been showcased at the Penang State Exhibition in Malaysia in September 2021 and September 2022. Additionally, the liquid palm sugar earned the first place as an export product from Medan City in May 2022. As derivative products of palm sugar continue to develop, the supply of raw materials, the cultivation, and plant maintenance must be continuously addressed to ensure a steady supply. The need for constant technological development in the advancement of these palm sugar products to ensure their sustainability was also emphasized. After the emergence of derivative products, the farmers stand to benefit by generating employment and receiving added value, which positively impacts their income.
