Indonesia Explores Fisheries Processing Collaboration with Japan

The Minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), conducted a visit to Japan's largest and most successful fishing company, Marusen Suisan. During the visit, the Minister identified potential areas of collaboration between Indonesia and Japan. Specifically, in the field of fisheries processing, Indonesia could explore the possibility of technological collaboration to enhance the quality and diversity of processed seafood products. This could include innovations in seafood sauce blends and pickled fish products. This partnership can yield mutual benefits by leveraging each other's expertise to create innovative and market-friendly products. Indonesia's capture fisheries production, especially in marine and inland public waters, grew by 2.23% and 2.71%, respectively, in 2020. Additionally, bilateral trade for Indonesian fisheries products showed promising figures, with an estimated export value of USD 6.24 billion and a volume of 1.22 million tons in 2022.

Japan is one of the main destination countries for Indonesia's fisheries exports, with a total export volume of 1,431.5 tons. The purpose of this visit was also to expand the trade information network for fisheries commodities. The Minister emphasised that sharing market insights and trade data can enhance Indonesia's understanding of consumer preferences and potential growth in the fisheries sector. He believes that this collaboration can significantly contribute to promoting innovative SMEs in Indonesia and strengthening the economy. Through cooperation, it can create a positive impact on both countries' fisheries industries while fostering lasting friendship and prosperity.
