The coastal community of Muncar in Banyuwangi, East Java, held the traditional "petik laut" (sea-picking) ceremony on the 15th of Muharram in the Islamic calendar, which has become an annual event contributing to the local economy. This tradition symbolizes gratitude for the bountiful harvest from the sea they have received throughout the year. The ritual involves offering and casting offerings into the sea while hoping for an abundant catch in the upcoming year to improve the welfare of the fishing community.
To support the community's aspirations for a better fishing harvest, the Banyuwangi Regency Government, through the local Fisheries Department, is taking proactive steps to target increased fish catches and processing to boost the local economy. The head of the Fisheries Department, Alief Rachman Kartiono, emphasized that achieving abundant fish results requires not only prayers but also efforts to build and maintain a healthy fish ecosystem. The establishment of the Fishery Community Monitoring Group (Pokmaswas Perikanan) serves as an educational platform to raise awareness about the importance of marine and fisheries resources preservation. Moreover, to enhance the fishermen's economic conditions, the Banyuwangi Fisheries Department is actively supporting and empowering women's fishing groups. By promoting fish processing and creating alternative economic opportunities during lean fishing periods, the goal is to empower fishing families to prosper. The petik laut ceremony, with the presence of the Small and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) Bazaar, provides additional income sources and a joyous atmosphere for the people of Muncar.
Looking ahead, the Deputy Regent of Banyuwangi, H Sugirah, expressed hope that the waters of Muncar will continue to yield abundant fish, leading to prosperous and happy lives for the community. Gratitude for Allah's blessings is emphasized, as it is believed that being grateful will attract more blessings while ingratitude may lead to their withdrawal.
