Indonesia plays a crucial role in the global copper industry, a basic commodity that is experiencing increased demand due to the growing production of electric vehicles and solar panels. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Indonesia ranks sixth in copper mining production, with a total output of 920 thousand tons in 2022. Additionally, the data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows a significant 40.35% increase in copper ore exports in 2022, reaching 3.1 million tons and reaching a historical high export value of USD 9.24 billion. This trend is welcomed by competitive copper mining companies in Indonesia. PT Amman Mineral Internasional Tbk (Amman), one of the largest mining operations in the country, has successfully transformed into one of the world's most efficient mines. Through its subsidiary, PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara, the Batu Hijau copper and gold mine in West Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, produced approximately 8.78 billion pounds of copper and 8.7 million ounces of gold in 2020. Amman plans to extend the mine's lifespan until 2030 and has an exploration project called Elang, one of the world's largest copper and gold reserves, set to begin operations in 2031.
Amman's strategic steps, including operational efficiency, have revived the previously deemed uneconomic Batu Hijau mine since it was taken over in 2016. The company attributes its success to the bold thinking of its employees, motivating them to hone their skills and surpass existing achievements. Amman constantly evaluates procedures and work techniques, embracing a mentality prepared to face challenges and changes, striving for operational excellence in mining while upholding sustainability principles in environmental, social, and corporate governance management. As the demand for copper rises with the increasing production of electric vehicles in the future, Amman, which recently went public on the Indonesia Stock Exchange on July 7, 2023, benefits from efficient C1 cash costs and a strong mining safety record. Copper needs are expected to keep growing as electric vehicle sales exceeded 10 million in 2022, according to the Global EV Outlook 2023 by the International Energy Agency. The report indicates that 14% of all new car sales in 2022 were electric vehicles, up from about 9% in 2021 and less than 5% in 2020.
