QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) payment technology has experienced rapid growth in Indonesia, providing support for the economy and the tourism sector, particularly in Aceh Province. According to Arya Rangga Yogasati, an Economist Expert from the Payment System Technology Innovation Development Group at Bank Indonesia, as of May 2023, the number of QRIS users has reached 35.80 million. Bank Indonesia aims to reach 45 million users by the end of 2023. The past year has seen an addition of 17.2 million new users, reflecting the high adoption rate of QRIS, and the optimistic outlook to achieve the target by the end of the year.

Arya highlights the significant growth of QRIS implementation in the tourism sector of Aceh Province. There are 980 QRIS users in the tourism sector in Aceh, with Banda Aceh having the highest number of users at 374, followed by Aceh Besar with 77 users, Sabang with 74 users, Aceh Tengah with 74 users, and Lhokseumawe with 54 users. The policy of a 0.3% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) for micro-enterprises brings three important benefits: reduced transaction costs for micro-businesses, improved service quality for payment service providers, and faster investment turnover and merchant expansion.

QRIS has also facilitated cross-border trade and tourism activities, especially for MSMEs. The use of local currencies in bilateral transactions with tourists from partner countries enhances macroeconomic stability. Tourists from partner countries can use their own country's payment applications through QRIS scanners at Indonesian merchants, and vice versa for Indonesian tourists in partner countries. The rapid growth and widespread adoption of QRIS technology showcase Indonesia's significant progress in the digital payment sector, supporting efficiency in transactions and fostering economic and tourism growth across regions, including Aceh Province.
