Indonesia's Coal Exports to China Surge, Increase by 600% to Cambodia

Indonesia's coal exports to China have experienced a significant surge this year, providing a lifeline to the coal export industry amidst declining demand from other countries. Data from the Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) shows that Asia remains the dominant market for Indonesian coal exports, with India being the largest destination. The increased demand from Asian countries is attributed to higher economic growth, especially in Vietnam and the Philippines, as well as the recent heatwaves in the region and their ongoing dependence on fossil fuels.

The total volume of coal exports in June 2023 was 28.60 million tons, a decline of 9.54% compared to the previous month and a sharp drop of 16.2% year on year. While India remains the top export destination with 6.11 million tons, experiencing a 27.66% month-to-month drop, China comes second with 4.74 million tons, showing a 26.4% year-on-year increase. Notably, some countries in Asia have seen coal exports skyrocket by hundreds of percentages in June compared to the same period last year, driven by the heatwaves in the region and their affordability of Indonesian coal. However, India's coal exports have declined due to increased domestic production, whereas China remains the largest foreign exchange contributor from Indonesian coal exports, with a value of USD 3.81 billion, reflecting a significant increase of 26.11%.

Overall, Indonesia's total coal exports in the first half of 2023 reached 181.57 million tons, a 6.44% increase compared to the same period last year. The rise in export volume this year can be attributed to Indonesia's prior ban on coal exports in January 2022, leading to significantly lower export volumes in the first half of 2022. China's coal demand saw a drastic increase of 61.23% in the first half of 2023, reaching a total of 40.83 million tons, driven by the ongoing heatwaves in the country. Despite the surge in China's coal demand, India remains the largest market for Indonesian coal exports, with a total of 48.97 million tons in the first half of 2023, though this represents a 20.6% decline compared to the same period last year, primarily due to increased domestic production in India. The total value of coal exports for the first half of 2023 was recorded at USD 19.11 billion, showing a 9.8% decline compared to the previous year, with China, India, Japan, and Vietnam being the major contributors to foreign exchange earnings from Indonesian coal exports.
