Embracing Opportunities and Challenges of the Carbon Market for the Industry

The Indonesian Financial Services Authority (OJK) announces that live trading for the carbon market will begin in September 2023. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry will simultaneously launch a pilot project involving 100 million tons of CO2 to coincide with the carbon market's debut. A pre-launch event will be held in July 2023, followed by the issuance of regulations by OJK. Brian Pramudita, CEO of BATS Consulting, believes that the launch of the carbon market presents an opportunity for the industry, with the potential for revenue amounting to around IDR 8,000 trillion based on the extensive forest areas in Indonesia. However, he also highlights several challenges that need to be addressed for the successful implementation of the carbon market.

Indonesia's vast tropical forests, mangrove areas, and peatlands have the potential to absorb approximately 113.18 gigatons of carbon emissions. Trading carbon credits through the market could generate a significant economic opportunity, promoting renewable energy, innovation, international cooperation, and sustainable economic growth. Brian emphasizes the importance of adopting internationally recognized standards for carbon certificates to ensure the competitiveness and economic value of Indonesian carbon credits. He also stresses the need for appropriate regulations to manage price fluctuations and encourages the implementation of a carbon tax scheme with rates higher than those of carbon certificates to incentivize green projects and discourage businesses from choosing to pay taxes rather than investing in environmental initiatives.
