Trade Attaché Riyadh Gunawan stated that the export potential of Indonesian automotive glass could increase following a meeting with Saudi Arabian automotive glass importer, Salem Auto Glass (SAG). Gunawan highlighted the growing demand as a key factor in boosting the export of automotive glass from Indonesia. He emphasized that the quality of Indonesian automotive glass is on par with products from other countries. Gunawan expressed hope that exports of Indonesian automotive glass to Saudi Arabia would continue to rise based on the positive feedback received from SAG, stating that Indonesian automotive glass is of excellent quality and even surpasses normal standards.
According to Trade Statistics, Indonesia exported automotive glass worth USD 806.56 million to Saudi Arabia in 2022, USD 599.59 million in 2021, and USD 499.63 million in 2020. Saudi Arabia is the fourth-largest export destination for Indonesian automotive glass. Globally, Indonesia's total exports of automotive glass reached USD 10.98 billion in 2022, USD 8.64 billion in 2021, and USD 6.60 billion in 2020. The top five export destinations for Indonesian automotive glass are the Philippines with a value of USD 2.85 billion, Vietnam with USD 1.29 billion, Thailand with USD 992.03 million, Saudi Arabia with USD 806.56 million, and Japan with USD 643.46 million.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's imports of similar products from various countries have increased over the past three years. In 2022, the imports amounted to USD 16.37 billion, USD 15.18 billion in 2021, and USD 15.10 billion in 2020. The top suppliers of automotive glass to Saudi Arabia in 2022 were Japan with USD 3.98 billion, China with USD 2.30 billion, the United States with USD 2.01 billion, Germany with USD 1.25 billion, and South Korea with USD 1.23 billion. Indonesian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Abdul Aziz Ahmad, highlighted the need for intensive communication and sustained market penetration to position Saudi Arabia as a strategic trading partner for Indonesian products, including automotive glass.
