The Jayapura City Government is pushing for the development of the Jayapura container port, also known as Jayapura Port, as an export port for the Eastern Indonesia and Pacific regions. The government encourage the optimization of Jayapura Port as an export port, especially for exports in the Pacific and East Asia regions according to Acting Mayor of Jayapura. To realize this, The Acting Mayor greatly hopes for the support from several local governments in the Papua region, particularly regarding the support for goods or commodities to be exported, such as cocoa, sago, maize, and others. This includes the fisheries sector, which also has great potential, especially for tuna.
During President Jokowi's recent visit to Papua New Guinea, strategic issues related to economic development in the Pacific region were also discussed. About trade relations, and Jayapura will become a gateway for trade in the Pacific region has been discussed. Therefore, The Acting Mayor encourages local governments in the Papua region, especially in the Tabi area, to support this plan. He is optimistic that if it starts from the Tabi region, including Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, Keerom Regency, and Sarmi Regency, with their respective flagship products, this plan will truly come to fruition. The program start with flagship programs, considering what Papua have and then export it. For example, from Sarmi, Papua have fish and shrimp. Then from Keerom, Papua have maize. Jayapura City also has tuna, as well as Jayapura Regency. This way, Papua can export seafood and agricultural products. This matter has also been discussed with the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia, so it can be followed up and realized in the future. According to The Minister, the doors are wide open for both raw material exports and processed exports.
