In the district of Central Lampung, Lampung Province, approximately 200,000 sweet pineapples are harvested daily in the plantations owned by PT Great Giant Pineapple (GGP), a leading private-labeled canned pineapple producer. Around 50% of GGP's pineapple production is exported to over 60 countries and regions. In addition to canned pineapples, the company also produces fresh pineapples, pineapple jam, packaged pineapple slices, juice concentrates, and canned fruit cocktails. As soon as fresh Indonesian pineapples gained official access to the Chinese market, we began planting more pineapple trees to enhance our production capabilities said Director of Corporate Affairs at GGP. It takes approximately eight to ten days to ship pineapples to China, with stops in several other countries. In August 2022, the General Administration of Customs China issued a new protocol approving the export of fresh Indonesian pineapples to China, provided they meet the requirements. Immediately after obtaining approval, GGP started exporting fresh pineapples to China. To date, more than 42 containers carrying over 580 tons of pineapples have been shipped via cold chains from Lampung to southern Chinese ports. It takes approximately eight to ten days to ship pineapples to China, with stops in several other countries. The temperature must be maintained below 10 degrees Celsius to protect the freshness of the fruit and prevent spoilage. After unloading the pineapple cargo, the containers are filled with fruits such as apples, oranges, and pears, which thrive in China but not in Indonesia, and then return to Indonesia. Fruit trade between China and Indonesia has become increasingly intensive in recent years. Under the RCEP scheme and the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (FTA), GGP can export pineapple products to China duty-free, so Indonesian pineapples can reach customers quickly and at a good price.
