BPS Reports Indonesian Tourism Resurgence Backed by a Remarkable 312.91% Increase in Foreign Tourists

Foreign tourist visits to Indonesia have experienced a significant surge, with a cumulative increase of 312.91% from January to May 2023 compared to the same period in the previous year, totaling 4.12 million visits. This data reflects the continuous revival of Indonesia's tourism sector, as the number of foreign tourist visits by May 2023 already accounts for 69.94% of the total visits in 2022. In May 2023 alone, there were 945,590 foreign tourist visits, marking a 9.21% increase compared to April 2023 and a substantial rise of 166.42% compared to May 2022.

The majority of foreign tourists arrived in Indonesia via airports, with 659,060 visits recorded in May 2023, showing a notable increase of 258.52% from May 2022 and a 17.60% rise from April 2023. However, arrivals by sea experienced a decline of 19.74% compared to April 2023, even though there was still a significant 293.70% increase compared to May 2022. Malaysia, Australia, and Singapore were the top three countries contributing to the highest number of foreign tourist visits in May 2023. The positive trend in tourist arrivals also influenced the occupancy rate of starred hotels in Indonesia, which reached 49.03% in May 2023, representing a slight decrease of 0.82 percentage points compared to the same month in 2022.
