Efforts to Boost the Performance of Forest Product Exports Persist

The Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) is committed to boosting the export performance of various non-oil and gas products, including agricultural and forestry products. These two types of products are Indonesia's main export products after mineral fuels, fats and oils, iron and steel, metal ores, and footwear. The ministry has implemented strategic measures to support export performance by providing policy relaxations for these products. For example, there is a relaxation in the size of the cross-section for certain wood products, allowing for increased export limits. Additionally, subsidies for the processing of Surveyor Reports (LS) are provided to micro and small businesses. The Ministry of Trade has also issued regulations on technical verification and export policies to ensure the compliance of exported products. Export activities, including forestry industry products, must undergo technical verification by independent surveyors approved by the Minister of Trade. Major export destinations for Indonesian forestry industry products include China, the United States, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Australia, Vietnam, Taiwan, and the Philippines. To improve export performance in these countries, market access needs to be strengthened through facilitation, export promotion, business matching, and trade enhancement in the target countries.

The Indonesian Ambassador to Germany, Arif Havas Oegroseno, highlighted that the European Union (EU) is tightening import criteria for forest products that may contribute to deforestation. However, Indonesia has the Sustainable Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK) recognized by the EU, which guarantees the sustainability of Indonesian timber. During an exhibition in Germany, Ambassador Arif promoted the SVLK and emphasized the advantages of Indonesian timber, including the green lane facilities granted by the EU. Indonesian processed and technical wood products remain popular in the European market, particularly in Germany, due to their quality and innovation. At the Interzum 2023 exhibition in Germany, Indonesian products achieved potential transactions worth USD 3.1 million or IDR 46 billion.
