According to the IMF's Article IV Consultation report released on June 26, Indonesia's strong macroeconomic performance and cautious monetary and fiscal policies have contributed to its positive recovery. The central bank, Bank Indonesia (BI), appreciates the IMF's positive evaluation of Indonesia's economy.
The IMF report highlights Indonesia's successful response to global challenges in 2022, including healthy growth, declining inflationary pressures, and a stable financial system, thanks to forward-looking policies and regulatory synergy. The IMF's Board of Directors expressed appreciation for various policies implemented by Indonesian authorities in 2022, including the timely return to the maximum fiscal deficit limit of 3% and the commitment to fiscal discipline. Adequate monetary policy implementation to maintain price stability and the resilience of the financial sector were also acknowledged. The report emphasizes the importance of implementing the Omnibus Law on Job Creation and the Law on Development and Strengthening of the Financial Sector to facilitate investment, deepen the financial market, and mitigate the scarring effects of the pandemic.
The IMF projects that Indonesia's economic performance will remain strong with slight moderation in 2023. However, the report cautions that certain risk factors, particularly related to global economic and financial uncertainties, could influence the growth outlook. The IMF recommends the normalization of fiscal and monetary policies to pre-pandemic conditions, the sustainability of financial sector policies supporting inclusive growth, and broader policy reforms to stimulate medium-term growth.
