Indonesia has been elected as a member of the Executive Council of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for the 2023-2027 term. The successful election took place during the 55th Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia and The Pacific in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Alongside Indonesia, China, South Korea, and Japan were also chosen as representatives of the East Asia and Pacific region.
The achievement is attributed to the collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Indonesia's accredited representatives in the CAP member countries. This selection showcases international recognition and trust in Indonesia's tourism sector, and it presents an opportunity for the country to contribute to the development of tourism programs in the Asia-Pacific region, both domestically and globally. Indonesia aims to focus on sustainable tourism, human resource development, digitalization, and tourism transformation in its role as an Executive Council member, as well as being part of the Task Force on "Redesigning Tourism for The Future."
By actively participating in UNWTO's initiatives, Indonesia aims to shape the future of the global tourism sector, creating broader business opportunities and increased employment prospects in the tourism industry. The country's commitment to the development of tourism in East Asia, ASEAN, and the Pacific aligns with the goal of promoting a new concept of tourism that will have a positive impact both globally and within Indonesia.
