Indonesia's trade with South Africa has exhibited a positive trend in recent years. From 2020 to 2022, the total trade between the two countries surged by 60.6%, reaching a substantial value of USD 3.25 billion in 2022. This growth was largely supported by a remarkable 38.07% increase in export value. However, the export performance during January to April 2023 has been relatively stagnant, with a decline from USD 330 million to USD 294 million compared to the same period in 2022. Despite this, there are promising opportunities for further development.
To enhance trade relations and address challenges, the Head of the Indonesian Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) in Johannesburg, Tonny Hendriawan, emphasizes the importance of optimizing the export of processed food products from Indonesia to South Africa. The current export value of these products falls below the market's true potential, highlighting the need for strategic measures to increase market share. In this regard, Indonesian companies are participating in significant trade events such as Africa's Big 7 exhibition in Johannesburg, held from June 16th to 20th, 2023. Tonny Hendriawan expresses hope that the presence of diverse Indonesian products at this exhibition will not only boost their market share but also serve as a gateway to expanding business opportunities in South Africa and neighboring countries.
Despite challenges related to import tariffs and understanding local consumer behavior, Tonny remains optimistic about the prospects for Indonesian products in South Africa. Some Indonesian food products have already made their way into the South African market, providing a foundation for further penetration. By addressing tariff barriers and studying consumer preferences, Indonesian exporters can unlock the full potential of the South African market and establish a stronger foothold in the region.
