Investment in 20 Special Economic Zones Reaches IDR 8.5 Trillion in Q1 2023

Government of Indonesia has established 20 Special Economic Zones (SEZs), consisting of 10 industrial SEZs and 10 tourism SEZs. In the first quarter of 2023, the realization of investment in SEZs reached IDR 8.5 trillion, with an additional 54 businesses operating in the SEZs and the creation of 10,918 job opportunities. In 2022, the realization of investment in SEZs amounted to IDR 113.3 trillion. The total investment included contributions from businesses amounting to IDR 87.6 trillion (79%) and from corporations amounting to IDR 25.7 trillion (23%). Among the 20 SEZs, there were 269 operating businesses with a total of 66,740 employees.

Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs and Acting Secretary-General of the National SEZ Council, Susiwijono Moegiarso, expressed his hope for continuous improvement in investment performance, given the improving investment climate, trust in the country, and the positive macroeconomic fundamentals. He also mentioned the recent appointment of six high-ranking officials as Administrators of the SEZs. The Administrators are responsible for providing business licensing services and other necessary permits for businesses, non-permit services required by businesses, as well as supervision and control of SEZ operations. Susiwijono emphasized that the role of Administrators should extend beyond permit services and encompass the supervision and control of SEZ operations. Despite the uncertainties ahead, SEZs are expected to continue serving as sources of new economic growth, contributing to both the national and regional economies.
