The development of the agro-industry in Indonesia is crucial for increasing the demand and production of agricultural products, as well as improving the prices and income of farmers. This development has a significant multiplier effect, as it stimulates the upstream agro-industry, marketing sectors, and supporting sectors such as finance and insurance. Puji Lestari, the Head of Agricultural and Food Research Organization (ORPP) at BRIN, emphasized five main reasons why agro-industry is vital for future national economic growth: transforming comparative advantages into competitive ones, having a large market share and value-added, creating strong linkages with other sectors, utilizing local raw materials, and driving the transition from agriculture to industry.
To support the agro-industry program, the development of a comprehensive system and supporting technologies is necessary. The concept of Zero Emission is embraced to ensure a positive impact not only on the products but also on the surrounding environment. Mulyana Hadipernata, the Head of PRA BRIN, highlighted the need for research and innovation in utilizing abundant resources like palm oil and sago, to address challenges and promote sustainable and extensive utilization. By focusing on integrated agro-industrial concepts, leveraging by-products and co-products, and implementing sustainable practices, the agro-industry in Indonesia can become a competitive, environmentally friendly, and sustainable sector.
