Indonesia and Malaysia have been ranked as the top two global destinations for Muslim travelers, according to the Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2023. The report, which analyzes data from nearly 140 countries, identifies Indonesia and Malaysia as leading countries in Halal tourism based on criteria such as access, communication, environment, and service. With a significant Muslim travel demographic worldwide, the GMTI predicts that the number of Muslim travelers will reach 110 million in 2022 and is expected to increase to 140 million this year.
Asian countries currently lead the global Halal travel industry, with over 31 percent of Muslim tourists visiting these destinations. The GMTI forecasts that by 2028, the number of Muslim tourists will reach 230 million, with significant expenditure estimated at USD 225 billion. Besides Indonesia and Malaysia, other Asian countries listed in the GMTI 2023 include Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines.
The GMTI 2023 report also highlights travel behaviors that are expected to impact the rising travel trends among Muslim travelers, such as selecting destinations and activities to enhance health and well-being, seeking authentic experiences, and considering aspects that align with their personal lives. The report aims to provide insights that foster better understanding, inclusivity, and closer relationships with this demographic.
