Italian defense company, Drass Galeazzi Srl, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indonesian shipyard company PT Republik Palindo, a subsidiary of Republikorp based in Batam, Indonesia, for the joint production of DG 550 class Midget submarines, a compact submarine which use the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology and Autonomous Attack Submarines which is an unmanned underwater platforms used for underwater reconnaissance and coastal vessel interception missions.
Indonesia requires more submarines to strengthen its maritime defense capabilities, as we are an archipelagic nation that relies on free sea lanes and the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL)’s strength in safeguarding the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia is absolute. Additionally, TNI AL needs communication technology that ensures the integration of all fleet elements, including command and control, communication, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR). That is why mastery of maritime military assets is a crucial issue that needs to be prioritized in the current national resilience development, according to Norman Joesoef, the founder of Republikorp.
