Sandiaga Sets Target for Tourism Revenue to Reach USD 10 Billion This Year

Sandiaga Uno, Indonesia's Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, has set a target of USD 10 billion in tourism earnings by 2023. Sandiaga believes that the tourism industry would increase at twice the rate it did in 2022. Sandiaga declared at the Joint National Meeting of the Indonesian Tourism Industry (GIPI) on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Hotel Raffles Jakarta that the target is to achieve 8.5 million foreign tourist arrivals, surpassing the government's initial target of 7.4 million at the upper limit.

According to Sandiaga, Indonesia successfully attracted 2.5 million foreign tourists in the first quarter alone. He expressed optimism that the country may exceed its objective of 8.5 million tourist visits by leveraging on this momentum. Sandiaga seeks to allow local tourism movements of up to 1.4 billion people in addition to 8.5 million overseas tourist arrivals. Furthermore, the former Deputy Governor of Jakarta strives for a USD 26.5 billion export value in the creative economy sector. Sandiaga also stated that the tourist and creative economy ecosystem generates 45 million job prospects, accounting for more than 15% of overall employment in Indonesia.
