Indonesia Poised to Become Top Investment Destination in Energy Transition Amid Economic Recovery

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto recently met virtually with the American Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (AICC) to discuss Indonesia's perspective on the global recession potential and the progress of its energy transition policies. The meeting aimed to engage the US private sector in Indonesia's energy transition efforts and highlight the country's strong economic performance, including a 5.31% growth rate in 2022, praised by international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Minister Airlangga emphasized Indonesia's appeal as an investment destination for energy transition, citing the launch of a USD 400 million green bond by Citi Group to support the expansion of the green energy sector, particularly geothermal energy.

During the meeting, discussions also revolved around significant announcements made at the G20 Summit in Bali. International partners, including the US, Japan, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Denmark, Norway, and the European Union, committed USD 20 billion (equivalent to IDR 300 trillion) to support Indonesia's energy transition. Furthermore, the US announced a joint project with Indonesia to establish the country as a pioneer in small modular reactor (SMR) technology within the ASEAN market. CEO of Freeport-McMoRan, Richard Adkerson, expressed interest in Indonesia's position on global climate change and highlighted Freeport-McMoRan's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Minister Airlangga reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 while ensuring energy supply for the population alongside impressive economic growth.
