President Joko Widodo, commonly known as Jokowi, invited Japanese companies to invest in the development of Indonesia's new capital city, Nusantara. The invitation was extended during a CEO Meeting with major Japanese corporations held on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Hiroshima on Sunday (May 21). "The President has expressed his satisfaction in working with Japan due to its high quality, but he expects more competitive prices," said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in a virtual briefing about the meeting on Monday. To attract Japanese investments in priority sectors such as industrial downstreaming, energy transition, and the development of the new capital city, Jokowi assured them that amidst global economic uncertainty, Indonesia's economy remains resilient.
Jokowi referred to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), projecting Indonesia's economy to grow by 5% in 2023 and 5.1% the following year. Indonesia's economic growth is expected to surpass the global and G20 average. "Therefore, President Jokowi stated that investing in Indonesia is highly promising. There is a strong commitment from the government to continuously improve the investment climate and competitiveness," said Retno. She also acknowledged Japan's commitment to supporting investment cooperation with Indonesia, as demonstrated by the presence of Prime Minister's Advisor Masafumi Mori at the CEO meeting. The event was attended by two Japanese financial institutions (JICA and JBIC), four Japanese business associations (JETRO, JIBH, JBC, J-CODE), and 24 companies. The meeting resulted in five memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between the IKN Authority and JICA, JBIC, JIBH, J-CODE, and UR, as well as 24 documents expressing initial commitment to cooperation (LoI) between the IKN Authority and Japanese companies.
