Confagricoltura: Agreement on Processing Tomatoes Addresses Our Concerns

"We are satisfied with the agreement reached on the price of industrial tomatoes in Northern Italy," declares Massimiliano Giansanti, the president of Confagricoltura. "After lengthy negotiations, the agricultural sector has been recognized with a fair price of 150 euros per ton, which we had set as our objective at the beginning of the month. This price takes into account the increased costs and quotations established by our direct competitors in other EU member states, as well as market dynamics."

"As Confagricoltura, we have done our utmost at all levels to put an end to a situation of great uncertainty," continues Giansanti. "We have always believed that all sectors can strengthen and grow if value is created for all components."

The agreement also includes an increase in price for late tomatoes compared to the previous year. "This represents an important incentive to extend the campaign beyond mid-September," emphasizes the president. "It is also significant that the industry has committed to revising the quality requirements for the product in the coming year."

Thanks to this recent agreement, which covers the Northern region where over 50% of Italian industrial tomatoes are processed and nearly 60% of the cultivated area is located, Italy can firmly maintain its position as the world's third-largest producer of industrial tomatoes, with 5.5 million tons. This achievement comes after a 10% drop in production in 2022 compared to the previous year, and it positions Italy behind California and China in terms of tomato production.
