Indonesian Car Exports Surge 26% in January-April 2023

During the January-April 2023 period, Indonesia witnessed notable growth in the export of Completely Built Up (CBU) cars and components. Gaikindo reported that CBU exports reached 166,176 units, marking a 26% year-on-year increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Daihatsu led the market with 58,130 units, followed by Toyota with 40,754 units, and Mitsubishi Motor with 26,743 units. In contrast, the export of Completely Knock Down (CKD) cars, which are exported with complete components but not assembled, experienced a decline of 36.6% YoY. CKD exports amounted to 19,865 sets in the first four months of 2023, compared to 31,313 sets in the corresponding period of 2022. However, the export of car components saw a significant increase of 42% YoY, reaching 55.57 million pieces in January-April 2023.

Gaikindo's Secretary-General, Kukuh Kumara, explained that car export sales are long-term commitments or contracts established by companies in the previous year. He attributed the growth in car exports to Indonesia's relatively better handling of the pandemic and government incentives for businesses. With car production gradually returning to normal and an average production utilization rate of around 70%, Gaikindo hopes that positive demand will persist throughout the year, targeting car exports of 500,000 units. Indonesia predominantly exports seven-seater cars and commercial vehicles, with the Philippines and Vietnam serving as the largest export destinations. However, there are already 83 countries purchasing cars from Indonesia, and Kukuh emphasized the importance of stable economic conditions in these export destinations to further boost demand while supporting the continuous growth of car production in Indonesia.
