The Governor of West Sumatra, Mahyeldi, sees potential for the region to become a hub for the halal industry in Indonesia and the world due to several supporting factors. West Sumatra has a population of 5.4 million, the majority of whom are Muslim, and the region's philosophy of Adat Basandi Syarak-Syarak Basandi Kitabullah (ABS-SBK) is enshrined in provincial law. The province also received support from the Vice President to become Indonesia's halal industry center.
To realize the goal of becoming a halal industry hub, West Sumatra will conduct comprehensive development from upstream to downstream, including using Teluk Bayur Port as a halal port to ensure the halal quality of goods entering and exiting the province. Additionally, West Sumatra supports Indonesia's efforts to become a global halal industry center through the establishment of the Sharia Economic and Financial Regional Committee (KDEKS) and promoting halal certification for local small and medium-sized businesses.
