Italy is expected to experience the highest economic growth among the major EU economies this year, according to Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni. After a significant 9% contraction during the pandemic, Italy has witnessed a growth of 12% over the past three years, which Gentiloni considers a noteworthy achievement. The European Commission's spring forecasts project a 1.2% increase in Italy's GDP for this year, followed by a 1.1% rise in 2024. These figures represent an upward revision from the February estimates of 0.8% and 1% growth for 2023 and 2024, respectively. The Commission also expects Italy's deficit-to-GDP ratio to decrease from 4.5% in 2023 to 3.7% in 2024, while the country's public debt is predicted to be 140.4% of GDP in 2023 and 140.3% in 2024.
