Indonesia and EU Successfully Conclude 14th Round of I-EU CEPA Negotiations

The 14th round of negotiations for the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (I-EU CEPA) was held in Brussels, Belgium from May 12-18, 2023. Both parties made significant progress in the talks, with 18 key issues discussed including trade of goods, services, investment, government procurement, and intellectual property rights. The delegations were led by Johni Martha, Director of Bilateral Negotiations for Indonesia, and Filip Deraedt, Deputy Head of Unit for Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand for the European Commission. The next round of talks is scheduled for July 2023 in Indonesia.

Indonesia and the European Union have committed to maintaining the positive momentum achieved in the previous rounds of negotiations. The 14th round saw the resolution of several chapters, including Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Trade Remedies (TR), and Transparency. The completion of these chapters follows previous agreements on Customs and Trade Facilitation (CTF), Good Regulatory Practices (GRP), and Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS). In 2022, Indonesia's total trade with the EU was USD 33.2 billion, with Indonesia exporting USD 21.5 billion worth of goods to the EU and importing USD 11.7 billion worth of goods from the EU. Notable exports from Indonesia to the EU in 2022 included palm oil and its derivatives, industrial fatty acids, coal, copper, and footwear with leather uppers. Major imports from the EU to Indonesia in 2022 included iron and steel pipes, medicines, vaccines, paper pulp making machines, and recycled paper or cardboard.
