During the Easter weekend from April 7 to 11, over 229.916 passengers were transited through Catania's Vincenzo Bellini airport, with 118.468 arrivals and 111.448 departures. Of these passengers, 148.189 are national, while 81.727 are international. Palermo's "Falcone Borsellino" international airport also transited 126.000 passengers during the same period, a 6.5% increase from Easter 2022. Both airports are showing growth compared to pre-pandemic 2019 numbers, with a 2.5% increase in Catania and an 11,11% increase in Palermo.
Catania's Fontanarossa airport is also experiencing a positive trend in international passenger growth, with an almost 15% increase from 2022. The busiest day for Catania's airport is Sunday, April 9, with 36.335 arrivals and departures. In March 2023, there was a record increase in passenger traffic at both airports, with a 20% increase compared to 2022 and an 11.11% increase compared to 2019. Palermo's Punta Raisi airport had 827 movements, with 598 domestic flights and 229 international flights, indicating a positive trend expected to continue throughout the summer. The CEO of Gesap, the company that manages both airports, commented on their focus on improving airport infrastructure and services, with the opening of a new area dedicated to extra Schengen transits.
