On Tuesday, April 11, the Tourism and Creative Economy Minister of Indonesia, Sandiaga Uno, announced that the government has increased its international tourist visitation goal for 2023 from 7.4 million to 8.5 million visitors. This adjustment was made due to a recently observed "strong momentum" in the country's tourism industry. Sandiaga shared this news during the 12th Indonesian Tourism Industry Association (GIPI) commemoration event. According to Sandiaga, the Asia Pacific region's recent data shows a promising curve in tourism recovery, with a significant increase in the percentage of people's desire to travel post-pandemic. The two main markets, China and Australia, have now been joined by India in showing increasing interest in visiting Indonesia.
Sandiaga Uno also emphasized the need to increase the number of available flight seats destined for Indonesia to meet the projected demand. The Tourism Ministry will coordinate with the Indonesian Transportation Ministry to achieve this goal. The government is also aiming to attract up to ten million tourists from China in the next 5-10 years, according to the President's directive.
