Italy is set to increase tourism to the ancient city of Pompeii and other coastal locations with a new high-speed rail connection between Rome and Pompeii. The EUR 35 million project will create a new train station and transport hub near the Pompeii archaeological site, and will be a new stop on the high-speed train line connecting Rome to Naples and Salerno. This will allow visitors to reach Pompeii directly from Rome and Fiumicino Airport. The development is part of the Great Pompeii Project, an EU-funded initiative that could double visitor numbers to Pompeii from 20,000 a day. The new hub will also connect visitors to other archaeological sites via the Circumvesuviana railway network. While some tourism professionals celebrate the move for better connecting Naples and the Sorrento Peninsula, others are concerned that Sorrento may lose out as visitors may bypass staying the night on the peninsula
