As one of the efforts to increase national aquaculture production, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is developing tilapia aquaculture in Papua. Due to the availability of land, interest in consuming tilapia on this island is also high.
"Papua has a very large land potential, including in Jayapura and is suitable for the development of tilapia cultivation. In addition, the Papuan people's interest in consuming tilapia is very high. The hope is that this will be able to increase production and the economy in Jayapura and Papua in general," said Director General of Aquaculture, Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), Tb Haeru Rahayu, in a press release.
He hopes that the development of tilapia aquaculture in Papua will be able to support the increase in national tilapia aquaculture production which is targeted to reach around 2 million tons in 2023. In addition, it will also be able to meet market demand for this commodity which is also increasing.
In addition to local consumption, value fish is also an export commodity, especially to the United States, which is exported in the form of fillets.
