Collaborating with Partners, KKP is Ready to Realize 30 Percent of Conservation Area

The Directorate General of Marine Spatial Management (Ditjen PRL) of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) signed a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) with the Nusantara Nature Conservation Foundation (YKAN). This is to support the KKP's blue economy program to create 30 percent of the conservation area.

"The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has launched a policy direction for the development of the marine and fisheries sector based on a blue economy, through five strategic programs, one of which is increasing the area of marine conservation areas," said Secretary of the Directorate General of Marine Spatial Management Hendra Yusran Siry during the signing of the agreement which took place on Tuesday, 14 March 2023 at Surabaya.

Hendra said it was important for the government to synergize with various stakeholders, especially conservation partners, to realize the target of increasing the area of marine conservation areas.

"One of our tasks is to ensure that the arrangement and management of marine space, coasts and small islands runs well so that a prosperous marine and fisheries community and sustainable marine and fisheries resources can be realized," he said.

PKS on Support for the Management of Conservation Areas and Coastal Areas and Small Islands, he said, consists of several scopes, namely protection and utilization of marine conservation and biodiversity areas, utilization of coasts and small islands, marine spatial planning, utilization of marine services , sharing of data and information, as well as strengthening the capacity of human resources and public awareness.

YKAN Chairperson Herlina Hartanto said the YKAN program has a very large link in marine spatial management programs including supporting the expansion of new conservation areas in West Papua Province, strengthening the management capacity of conservation areas in Sawu Sea, NTT and the Derawan Regional Marine Protected Area.
YKAN works in 12 provinces throughout Indonesia. The agreed collaboration will cover 7 provinces or 60 percent of YKAN's working area, namely the Riau Islands, Bangka Belitung Islands, East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, Southeast Sulawesi, West Papua and Southwest Papua.

"Through this PKS, we are committed to supporting the government in realizing 30 percent of conservation areas in 2045," said Herlina. In line with the blue economy priority program, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono has emphasized that marine space management is the commander in chief in maintaining a sustainable marine ecology, including protecting conservation areas that have been formed by increasing effectiveness so as to have a welfare impact on communities and the coastal environment as well as heritage. for generations to come.
